Do I need therapy?

It’s the start of Mental Health Awareness Week - an opportunity to raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health and advocate change.

You are likely to know a few people in your life who are struggling with mental health issues - they may include you. But how do we need when we need more support than ourselves, and our closest family and friends, to start feeling better?

Firstly, going to a therapist or a counsellor isn’t a sign of weakness - I would argue, instead, that it’s a sign of strength. It’s a sign that you’ve come to terms with the fact that you need support and are ready to talk to someone about this.

Often people contact therapists as a last resort, when they are at rock bottom. That’s OK, but how much more would that person benefit if they got help earlier?

A lot of my clients say that even the process of making the initial contact with me and booking an appointment can start them feeling better about themselves - the placebo effect. They know that help is coming and they feel supported.

So what are the signs that you may need therapy?

You may be feeling:

  • More anxious than normal

  • Finding it hard to sleep

  • Socialising less or avoiding seeing friends of family

  • Finding work or school or college difficult

  • Eating more or less than usual

  • Having panic attacks for the first time or more often

  • Getting angry more easily

  • Finding it hard to control your emotions

  • Find it hard to concentrate

  • Feeling overwhelmed by everything

  • Uninterested in doing the things you usually enjoy like sport or watching tv

  • Feeling hopeless and that no-one cares about you

  • Self-harming or feeling like you don’t want to be here anymore

These symptoms may be new or part of an existing condition of anxiety or depression. Either way, therapy - and hypnotherapy which I offer - is there to give you a safe and supported place to explain how you feel honestly and openly and explore how you’d like to feel going forwards - ‘your preferred future’.

In each session we review how the previous week has been and what small steps you can take to make positive change.

My mission is to equip you with the right skills and techniques that you can use for long term change. These are tools you can go back to again and again whenever you find yourself struggling. And by learning these techniques, you are gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and how to cope better.

So reach out if you feel you need more help - there are a lot of brilliantly qualified and experienced therapists out there to support you.

I offer sessions on Zoom and at my clinic in Wedmore - https://www.tamsindenbighhypnotherapy.com/
